Background

Loyola Marymount University, founded in 1911, is the largest Catholic university on the West Coast. LMU is a premier Catholic university rooted in the Jesuit and Marymount traditions. LMU enrollment includes 5,667 undergraduate, 1,886 graduate and 1,319 law school students. Its 142-acre bluff-top campus is located in West Los Angeles and was recently included in “The Best 371 Colleges: 2010 Edition” Princeton Review, 2010.

The Problem

LMU was previously using a streaming product that was very limited. It did not allow users to expand the video into full screen – a feature their target audiences had become used to with other online destinations. It also played video instantly when a page loaded, with no option to change this default setting.

LMU&rsqo;s team (Web, New Media + Design) made plans to revamp its interactive site, and had aspirations to develop a new way to present the video content that would be in line with what users are accustomed to (i.e., YouTube, Hulu, etc.)

The Solution

LMU had already been using Sorenson Squeeze to compress its video and started investigating the possibility of using Sorenson 360 Total Video Delivery Network for its video needs. LMU credits the online tutorial of Sorenson 360 and their Sorenson Media sales manager as a wonderful resource for helping them understand the product. Afterwards, they were setup with a trial account that helped them further explore Sorenson 360 and determine it was the ideal solution for the university’s needs.

The preview and crop feature has also proved to be very beneficial to them, as well as the ability to choose different sized players to accommodate its various microsite templates, which include campus and departmental video tours.
